- Accepted CVWM and LAC service-file records identify Private Walter George Ponceby, service number 231409, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment), died 11 November 1917, aged 45, during or immediately after the Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres).
- He has no known grave. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial, Ypres, Belgium, on Panels 24–28–30, among approximately 55,000 men lost without trace in the defence of the Ypres Salient.
- Accepted remembrance-page image also lists him on Page 310 of the First World War Book of Remembrance, held in the Peace Tower, Parliament Hill, Ottawa.
- The 10th Battalion attacked Hill 52 on 10 November 1917 — the final day of the Second Battle of Passchendaele. Walter died the following day in the immediate aftermath.
- The accepted full LAC service file contains multiple casualty cards/medical-accounting pages recording "Killed in action" on 11 November 1917 and linking the death to his 10th Battalion service.
- His wife Margaret Jeane Ponceby was resident at 19 Arlington Apartments, Edmonton, Alberta at the time of his death — an address change from 8205-109 St. recorded at attestation in April 1916.
