Jim Roberts soon became an outstanding member of the football and basketball teams, and Bob Fulton placed in many track events. Doing outstanding double duty on the football and track teams were Erwin M e i n hardt and Dick M c W i l l i a m s , the latter of w h o m set a new State indoor record for the shotput in his senior year. Nick Coso and Ed Dudek also served on the basketball team. Still doing its share in the war effort, East High pledged itself to buy a $75,000 P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Jean Tadych was one of t w o leading bondadiers in this drive. Joe Nahra was elected to the position of Student Council treasurer for a second time, and George Evans became the council secretary. You were well represented on the Blue and Gold staff by Theresa Rail is Rose Berwing, Virginia Donnelly, Jean Comer, Effie Condopoulos, Irene Taylor, A n n Brothers, Dorothy W e s t c o t t , Paul Reed, Mary A n n Cook, Joe Nahra and Ruth Adler. June Mansfield's w r i t i n g ability was evidenced by her w i n n i n g of a Fighter Plane essay contest and second prize in the annual Horizons contest in which Charles Andrew won a first prize. Taking part in the production of "Stage Door," the annual play, were Phyllis Ferlisi, George Evans, Dawna Cornelius, Helka Koski, and Ellen Swartout. Your National Honor inductees, numbering twelve, included Charles Andrew, Norma Bona, Bernice Cappell, Effie Condopoulos, Irene Taylor, George Evans, Lilmar Forward, Donald Kauer, Pat Marshall, Frank Polito, Kathryn Ponceby, and Dorothy Westcott. Thus ended your second year at East High. You returned as seniors in the fall, ready to begin the t h i r d year of study which would reward you w i t h your final citizenship paper, a diploma. Again there was a new assistant principal, Mr. J. J. Stillinger, and there were also several new teachers. The annual W a r Chest drive was launched by Speakers Lilmar Forward and Charles Andrew, who told of Community Fund activities. George Evans was elected president of the Student Council, and Joe Nahra and Norma Bona became its vice-president and secretary, respectively. Another W a r Bond drive got underway, w i t h the goal a jeep for every homeroom; again your support was unanimous. Your first class organization was in the 12B, and you chose Joe Nahra, Irene Taylor, Pat Marshall, Bob Fulton, and Dick M c W i l l i a m s as your leaders. A n d the day you had your senior pictures taken, nothing could have been more evident. The boys' hair was well-combed and they wore suit coats. The girls tried hard to remain immaculate. Thirteen more members of your class, Annabel Topel, Rosemary G r z i n cic, Frances Relic, Lois W o l f e , Evelyn Hoff, Pauline Krasowska, Audrey Connelly, Tom Morrison, Elizabeth Scales, Rose Berwing, Joan Mette, Nancy Ploe and Bob Fulton were inducted into the National Honor Society. As had all other classes, you anxiously wondered which of your girls would become Mantle Orator, and you were not surprised when Mr. Smeltz named Lilmar Forward. George Hite, a new-comer to your class from East Tech, became a valuable member of the Blue and Gold basketball team. The results of the next Student Council election were Erwin Meinhardt, president; Effie Condopoulos, vice-president, and Frank Polito, treasurer. Those aspirants to a nursing career, the FNL Club girls, chose A r l i n e W u l f as their president. A t a Lincoln Club banquet the boys elected George Evans as their prexy, and Norman Cairns, secretary. Officers of the Interracial Club were Jean Solether, chairman, and Elizabeth Scales, secretary. Apparently satisfied w i t h their leadership, you re-elected Joe Nahra and Bob Fulton as president and treasurer of the 1 2 A class. Other officers were George Evans, vice-president; Rosemary Grzincic, secretary, and George Hite, sergeant-at-arms. The 12A Mixer proved to be one of the most enjoyable events in your school career.
