Darrow Relationship Research - Shirley Armstrong and Clarence Darrow

Last updated: 23 April 2026.

Scope

Question tested: can person-shirley-jean-armstrong-1930 be connected by evidence to Clarence Seward Darrow, the attorney, through Shirley's maternal Seem/Darrow line?

This pass followed the source-first repo rules: no 01_people/ edits, no manual 05_raw/ edits, new records left as status: proposed, and unproven people kept in 07_leads/.

Conclusion

Current conclusion: unsupported, not disproven.

There is not yet a documented relationship path from Shirley Jean Armstrong to Clarence Seward Darrow. The evidence reaches a proposed, image-backed Lola birth-certificate link to Minnie Darrow, then stops: Minnie's parents and Darrow birth family are not documented in the repo. Clarence's parentage is now represented by a proposed secondary timeline source, but Clarence biographies cannot bridge the gap in Shirley's line. The Darrow surname match remains only a research clue.

Evidence Chain

Link or claim Best current support Source status Evidence quality and gap
Shirley Jean Armstrong -> Lola Louise Seem source-birth-certificate-shirley-jean-armstrong-1930 accepted Strong image-backed Ohio birth certificate naming Shirley's parents.
Lola Louise Seem -> Minnie Darrow source-birth-certificate-lola-louise-seem-1909; event-birth-lola-louise-seem-1909 proposed Strong image-backed Ohio birth certificate, but still proposed. It names mother Minnie Darrow, age 33, birthplace Monroe County, residence Freedom Township near Bradner.
Minnie Darrow = Minnie Eva Darrow Seem / Minnie Seems lead-minnie-eva-darrow-1875; source-ohio-death-index-minnie-seems-1933; source-online-summary-samuel-minnie-seem-family-page-2026 lead / proposed / low-confidence Plausible but not proven. Death index gives Minnie Seems, 15 July 1933, Wood County, Ohio, Vol. 7338 Cert. 59746, but no parents, spouse, birth details, or exact death place.
Minnie Eva Darrow's parents and Darrow ancestry none unsupported This is the first hard break for the Clarence relationship question.
Clarence Seward Darrow -> Ammirus Darrow and Emily Eddy source-university-of-minnesota-law-library-clarence-darrow-timeline; lead-clarence-seward-darrow-1857 proposed Medium-quality secondary biographical source. It names Clarence's parents, birth date/place, and family context; direct vital/census/probate corroboration remains preferred.
Clarence's deeper paternal Darrow line external low-confidence family genealogy, "The Darrow Connection" external not yet ingested / lead only Useful search lead only. It suggests Clarence -> Ammirus -> Jedediah -> Ammirus -> Jedidiah -> Christopher -> George, but the line is not repo-proof and must be checked against underlying records.
Shared ancestor between Minnie and Clarence none found unsupported No most recent common ancestor can be identified or tested until Minnie's parents are documented.

Relationship Path

No supported Shirley-to-Clarence relationship path can be stated yet.

Segment Status Best source or target
Shirley Jean Armstrong -> Lola Louise Seem supported in accepted source source-birth-certificate-shirley-jean-armstrong-1930
Lola Louise Seem -> Minnie Darrow proposed, not accepted source-birth-certificate-lola-louise-seem-1909
Minnie Darrow -> Minnie's parents blocked HIR-20260423-018 and HIR-20260423-020
Minnie's Darrow line -> shared ancestor with Clarence unsupported requires Minnie's parents and backward Darrow proof
Clarence Seward Darrow -> Ammirus Darrow and Emily Eddy proposed secondary evidence source-university-of-minnesota-law-library-clarence-darrow-timeline

Because there is no documented most recent common ancestor, no cousin degree or removal can be computed.

Conflicts And Cautions

  • Lola's birth certificate gives Minnie Darrow's birthplace as Monroe County with no visible state; the public Samuel/Minnie family page gives Youngstown, Ohio. Preserve both until Minnie's death certificate, marriage record, census records, or birth-family records resolve the conflict.
  • The death-index candidate is indexed as Minnie Seems. Keep that spelling as recorded.
  • The public Samuel/Minnie family page is a low-confidence family-created page. It is useful for search targets, not proof.
  • FamilySearch and Ancestry indexed-only records should remain clues unless an image, full citation, or authoritative record can be reviewed.
  • Clarence Darrow biographies and timelines can document Clarence's comparison line, but they do not prove Shirley's Darrow ancestry.
  • The external "Darrow Connection" page includes citations and caveats, but it is still a compiled online genealogy. Do not use it as proof without checking the underlying records.

Public Search Disposition

Public web searches on 23 April 2026 did not expose a direct, image-backed record naming Minnie Darrow's parents or connecting her to Clarence Seward Darrow's documented Darrow line. Searched variants included Minnie Darrow, Minnie Eva Darrow, Minnie Seem, Minnie Seems, Samuel Henry Seem, Lola Louise Seem, Clarence Seward Darrow, Ammirus/Amirus Darrow, and Darrow ancestry combinations.

The University of Minnesota Law Library Clarence Darrow timeline was ingested as a proposed source because it gives a traceable secondary source for Clarence's birth, parents, and early Darrow-family context.

FamilySearch Books catalog item 553039, John Edward Armstrong's An Armstrong Ancestry, is marked available online and includes Darrow family as a subject, but agent access/download was blocked. It remains a signed-in manual-review target.

Ranked Next Artifacts

  1. Minnie's 1933 Ohio death certificate image or official copy: Minnie Seems, died 15 July 1933 in Wood County, Ohio, Ohio Death Record Index source ODC, Vol. 7338 Cert. 59746. This is the highest-value target because it may name parents, spouse, birthplace, exact death place, informant, and burial.
  2. Samuel Henry Seem and Minnie Darrow marriage record, about 1888-1909, likely Ohio or Michigan depending on records for earlier children. This may directly name Minnie's parents and residence.
  3. 1880 census image for Minnie as a Darrow child, with parallel searches in Mahoning/Youngstown, Monroe County, Sandusky County, Wood County, and nearby Ohio counties; expand to Michigan only if a direct record points there.
  4. Samuel/Minnie household census images for 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930, plus Samuel/widower context in 1940. These should verify children, migrations, and Minnie's birthplace and parents' birthplaces.
  5. Minnie obituary, cemetery/burial record with image, probate, church records, and Wood County/Freedom Township/Bradner local records.
  6. Signed-in manual review of FamilySearch Books item 553039, An Armstrong Ancestry, and any Darrow-family pages that mention the Seem/Darrow cluster.
  7. Direct Clarence-line corroboration if a Minnie link emerges: Clarence birth or baptism, 1860/1870 census images, Ammirus/Emily marriage or family records, Ammirus death/probate, and documented parent-child records for Clarence's paternal Darrow ancestors.
